2018-2019 Common Application Essay Prompts

March 7, 2018

The 2018-2019 Common Application essay prompts are now available to the public. The prompts remain unchanged from the 2017-2018 application season. This release is important news to consider, as it gives current high school juniors advanced notification and the opportunity to get a head start on their college essays. Keep in mind that these essay prompts are merely for the Common Application. Many colleges also require supplemental essays, which will usually be available when the Common Application portal goes live. Students should not wait until their senior year to get started on applications.

As a Nashville, TN college admissions counselor, I understand the challenge of contemplating what topics a student should write about for their college applications. Certain topics should be off-limits in a college essay. Some are more compelling than others. Many students I meet in Brentwood, Nashville, and Franklin, TN request college essay help. When I work 1:1 with students, we develop an ideation strategy and multiple editing meetings to ensure their college essay is presented in the most strategic way possible. Colleges look for critical themes throughout an essay, and it is vital that students dedicate the time and effort to this important piece of admissions evaluation.

College essays are typically considered “supporting documentation” for evaluative purposes in the admissions office. Aside from demonstrating adequate and robust writing skills, college essays also show a students’ depth of character, maturity, and unique contributions that they may bring with them to a campus environment. Essays provide application reviewers insight into the background of a candidate. Considering the number of applications a college admissions office receives each year, it is important that students differentiate their college essays to stand out. After reviewing nearly 12,000 college applications in my career, only a few stand out to me as essays that profoundly left an impact on me.

College admissions help is available to Franklin, TN, Brentwood, TN, and Nashville, TN students. Working with a private admissions counselor ensures a student is receiving the most strategic advising possible to improve their chances of earning college admission. Remember: Admission decisions are based on so much more than just the high school transcript.
