International Student Admissions in the US

International students often underestimate the amount of time and work that goes into submitting college application to US schools. In addition to submitting an application and writing statement, international student admissions require additional documentation and, in some cases, certain standardized exams. As an international student admissions consultant, I have found that admission requirements often vary based on the home country of the student. Below is an overview of the general requirements needed for international admissions to US colleges and universities. Before you begin planning for your student visa, there are several steps that must first be completed.


Like domestic students, international students are required to submit an application. For undergraduate international student admissions, this is often completed through The Common App or the Coalition Application.


Most colleges require a general college essay. This typically has a 650-word limit. Many colleges also require students to submit supplemental essays. Some, but not all colleges require recommendations. These should come from someone who knows the student in an academic capacity. They can also come from an internship, research, or volunteer supervisor.
