Do’s and Don’ts for College Visits and Campus Tours

College admissions has become a complicated process over the years. Visiting a campus is a great way to show ‘demonstrated interest’ and get a feel for a campus environment. More families are seeking out college admissions help, college essay help, ACT and SAT test prep help, and scholarship help to provide support and guidance throughout the process. As a private college admissions coach serving Brentwood, TN, Franklin, TN, and Nashville, TN students in Williamson County and Davidson County, I am often asked what students should be doing on their campus tours. Below is a list of my favorite Do’s and Don’ts.

DO schedule your visit in advance. You can usually do this online through the college admission website.

DON’T show up late. You’ll miss the presentation.

DO ask for a dining hall pass. It’s good to try the food!

DO ask to sit in on a call. DO schedule this before you arrive.

DO ask to meet with an admissions representative. DON’T request this unless you have adequate interview preparation. First impressions count!

DO your research on majors, research, and specifics about the university.

DO look around and see if students are smiling and seem happy.

DO keep a notebook handy and write down pros/cons after each visit. DON’T forget to do this!

DO ask about merit scholarships and deadlines.

DO stay for the whole tour.

DON’T bring pets, unless they are service dogs. I once got bit by a dog that a prospective student brought to campus. The dog had been recently rescued and was off-leash. It wasn’t a service dog and it was inappropriate for the animal to be there. Needless to say, that wasn't a great first impression for the student to have on an admissions committee.

DO collect business cards of everyone you meet with. DO follow up with a thank-you email.

DO keep a notebook handy and write down pros/cons after each visit. DON’T forget to do this!

In reality, there are many other factors one should consider when visiting a college campus, but after years of working as a Franklin and Brentwood, TN educational consultant, these are what I find to be the most important.
